Working in the sunless spray tanning industry we hear this statement every day:
"I don't want to look orange!"
So what causes the orange result? There are probably more scenarios that you might initially think!
1. More than likely the orange result comes directly from improper training of technicians that are over applying sunless solutions. A poorly trained (or untrained) technician can over saturate the skin with product, causing an unnatural and orangey hue. Remember... the more solution applied to the skin, the more unnatural looking or "orangey" the result can be. So it's not always smart to ask the technician to "go darker" in the room. The cosmetic bronzers that are applied on the skin in the room are not an exact match to what the final results of your tan may be. It is best to wait until the color has fully processed on the skin to see if you are happy with the results and go darker from there on your next visit if you want more color. It is easy to bump up the color if you want to go darker but there really isn't anything you can do to remove color if you feel you are too dark besides waiting for it to exfoliate off over the next 7-10 days.
2. Spray booths can also be a culprit to unnatural results this is because a machine sprays every single person the exact same way and can not make adjustments for the individual needs of each person. (Dry Skin, hormonal changes in skin, body type, size or height). Someone with very fair skin should be sprayed differently than someone with olive skin. Add to that the fact that you are standing in a cloud of solution that is going to eventually settle somewhere...more than likely on your feet!! Booths also leave it up to you to hit the right poses to cover the entire body..so if you are heavy chested, have creases in your skin (knees/elbows) the booth will miss those areas completely leaving unsightly white lines under the breasts and white crease lines on your elbows or knees. Many times the booths will over saturate the skin with product leaving you dripping with solution and taking you to an unnatural hue. Not to mention the lovely barrier creams that you are to apply to hands and feet. These creams can block color completely from the skin so if you don't get it right you can end up with funny lines from the creams as well.

3. Another thing that can throw off the color and results of your spray tan resulting in unnatural tans, uneven streaks or blotchy result is the pH level of your skin. Hormones, some medications, and certain auto immune diseases have the biggest effect on the pH levels of your skin and they can alter the outcome of your results. If your spray tanning salon does not include or offer a preparatory pH Balancing Treatment prior to your spray tan, you should probably be looking for another salon! At BodiBronze, we believe the pH Balancing Treatment is imperative and include it complimentary with every spray tan! It's THAT important to the potential outcome of your spray tan. It's also essential to keep those pH levels in line during the life of your spray tan, so that it can last as long as possible, and fade as naturally as possible. We recommend BodiCleanz pH Balancing Body Wash.
4. The other element that comes into play is a low quality product. Often times sunless products will come jam packed full of unnatural preservatives and low grade ingredients that can also lead to unnatural looking colors. The level of DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) that are added into the solutions can also affect the color results of your tan. A solution with high DHA concentrations can result in orange tans. Your technician should know your skin type and how their solutions will affect your skin and be able to adjust accordingly. BodiBronze uses EcoCertified DHA and all natural ingredients in all of our solutions and products.

So what can you do to avoid these things?
Be sure you are going to an accredited sunless salon with professional staff and quality products. Ask your technician questions. Research them online for real testimonials and seek out others opinions. If your technician does not know the name of the solution they are using, it may be a sign they are not very educated on the product! Be sure the environment is welcoming and comfortable. This is an extremely intimate service, so the environment should be clean and professional.
