UV Tanning Ban for Teens

On Thursday, August 15 2013, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill that bans indoor tanning in Illinois for anyone younger than 18.  The new law specifically bans teens from using equipment that emits ultraviolet radiation. This includes sun lamps and tanning booths. The bill doesn't apply to devices used in private residences, photo therapy devices used by physicians, or spray tanning.

Doctors have linked the rise in melanoma cases to tanning beds and time spent outside without the use of sunscreen. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization say natural and artificial ultraviolet radiation are cancer-causing substances. Therefore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issues a proposed order for stricter regulations on indoor tanning devices.

Where does this leave the sunless tanning industry in the future? All is not lost! We are expecting to see more young teens who still want to tan, but without the potential harmful effects of overexposure by UV tanning beds. This gives the sunless tanning industry a chance to encourage a healthy lifestyle for young teens everywhere.
